Picturesque East coast fishing village, with a working fish market. The
museum contains a magnificent tapestry, 15 feet long with almost a million stitches, recording the names of the fishing fleet and 189 men lost in a fishing disaster on 14 October 1881.
Founded in the early 12th century by Edgar, King of Scots, and given to monks from the Benedictine Monastery at Durham. Edgar was the son of Saint Margaret of Scotland, a Saxon princess who, fleeing from the invading Normans, was shipwrecked in Scotland. She was rescued by King Malcolm III, who married her. Renowned for her piety, she brought the Benedictines to Scotland.
In 1473 it became identified with the
Templars of Rosslyn Chapel in Edinburgh (of Da Vinci Code fame), and there are some Templar tombstones to be seen.
